Species Spotlight: Blackbutt is the Architects choice
If you’re looking for a timber that defines the modern Australian aesthetic—clean, light,
and incredibly tough—look no further than Blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis). As one of
the most common hardwoods found right here on the North Coast of NSW, it is a staplein our Heatherbrae yard for good reason.
1. The “Architect’s Choice” for Color
Blackbutt is prized for its neutral palette. While species like Jarrah or Spotted Gum lean
into reds and dark browns, Blackbutt provides a stunning array of honey-gold to pale
straw tones. It is the perfect canvas for modern “Hamptons” style homes or minimalist
coastal designs because it brightens a space rather than darkening it.
2. High Performance & Bushfire Resistance
Don’t let the light color fool you—Blackbutt is structural-grade timber that can handle the
harshest Australian conditions.
Hardness: With a Janka rating of 9.1 kN, it is highly resistant to indentations from
furniture and foot traffic.
BAL-29 Rated: Like Spotted Gum, Blackbutt is naturally fire-resistant. It is one of the
premier hardwoods designated for use in bushfire-prone areas.
Stability: Known for having a relatively straight grain, it is less prone to warping,
making it excellent for long-span decking.
Carroll’s Expert Tip:
Blackbutt is a “thirsty” timber. Because of its density, we always recommend a
high-quality oil like Cutek to prevent surface checking (small cracks) during its first
hot Hunter Valley summer. (on external Blackbutt)

3. Sustainable & Local
Because Blackbutt grows rapidly and is native to our region, it is one of Australia’s most
sustainable hardwood choices. It is harvested under strict environmental guidelines,
ensuring your project is as eco-friendly as it is beautiful.
4. Versatility: From Floor to Ceiling
Whether you are building out or fitting out, Blackbutt delivers a premium finish for
internal flooring, fire-resistant decking, and structural posts where strength is required
without a “heavy” visual weight.
